Summer means beach days, barbecues, and time outdoors—but it also brings the risk of sunburn. Many people don’t realize they’ve had too much sun until their skin starts to sting and turn red. By recognizing the early signs, you can act quickly to ease discomfort and prevent further damage. Here’s how to spot the first signs of sunburn—and what to do right away.

The First Signs of Sunburn

Sunburn happens when your skin is exposed to too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and your body’s natural defenses can’t keep up. The first symptoms usually appear within a few hours after sun exposure.

  • Mild redness and warmth – your skin feels hot to the touch and may start to feel tight.
  • Tenderness or irritation – especially noticeable when you move or touch the affected area.
  • Slight swelling – often on the shoulders, nose, or cheeks.
  • Dryness or itching – a sign that your skin is reacting to UV damage.

People with fair skin may notice symptoms sooner, while those with darker skin tones might not see redness right away but can still experience pain and sensitivity. If your skin becomes very red, painful, or develops blisters, it’s a sign of a more serious burn.

What to Do Right Away

Once you notice the first signs of sunburn, the goal is to stop the damage from getting worse and help your skin start healing.

  1. Get out of the sun immediately. Move indoors or into the shade, and cover up with lightweight clothing.
  2. Cool your skin. Apply cool, damp cloths or take a cool (not cold) shower or bath. This helps reduce pain and swelling.
  3. Moisturize. Use a gentle, fragrance-free lotion or aloe vera gel to soothe the skin. Avoid heavy ointments or petroleum-based products that can trap heat.
  4. Stay hydrated. Sunburn draws fluid to the skin’s surface and away from the rest of your body, so drink plenty of water.
  5. Don’t pop blisters. If blisters form, let them heal naturally—they protect against infection.

If you develop fever, chills, nausea, or large blisters, contact a healthcare provider. These can be signs of a severe burn that needs medical attention.

Helping Your Skin Heal

Healing time depends on how bad the burn is, but most mild sunburns improve within a few days. During recovery, treat your skin gently.

  • Stay out of the sun until the redness and tenderness are gone.
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing made of cotton or other soft fabrics.
  • Keep moisturizing several times a day to prevent peeling and dryness.
  • Avoid scrubbing or exfoliating until your skin has fully healed.

When your skin starts to peel, it’s a normal part of the healing process—your body is shedding damaged cells. Let it happen naturally without picking or peeling.

How to Prevent Sunburn Next Time

The best treatment for sunburn is prevention. A few simple habits can make a big difference.

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, and more often if you’re swimming or sweating.
  • Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
  • Wear protective gear—a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and lightweight long sleeves.
  • Be extra careful near water, sand, and snow, which reflect sunlight and increase exposure.

Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can reach your skin. Check the daily UV index before heading outside—it’s an easy way to plan safe sun time.

Enjoying the Sun Safely

Sunshine lifts our mood and helps our bodies make vitamin D, but too much can cause painful burns and long-term skin damage. By recognizing the first signs of sunburn and acting quickly, you can protect your skin and keep enjoying the outdoors safely.

Remember: enjoy the sun—but always with shade, sunscreen, and a little extra care.
