A city vacation can be full of excitement—museums, markets, parks, and cafés on every corner. But it also means a lot of walking, often far more than you’re used to at home. After a couple of days, your legs might feel heavy and your energy low, just when you want to see and do the most. With a little planning and a few smart habits, you can keep your energy up and make the most of every day.

Start the Day with the Right Fuel

A solid breakfast sets the tone for an active day. Choose foods that provide lasting energy—think whole-grain toast, eggs, oatmeal, or yogurt with fruit. Skipping breakfast or relying on just coffee and a pastry might give you a quick boost, but you’ll likely crash before lunchtime.

Hydration is just as important. Start drinking water early in the day, especially if you’re visiting a warm city or walking in the sun. Even mild dehydration can make you feel tired and sluggish.

Plan Your Route—and Your Breaks

It’s tempting to try to see everything in one day, but that’s a recipe for exhaustion. Instead, break your day into sections and schedule time to rest. Sit down for a coffee, relax in a park, or enjoy a leisurely lunch to recharge.

A good strategy is to mix sightseeing with short breaks. For example, after exploring a museum, take a few minutes to sit in the shade or people-watch at a café. You’ll enjoy the city more when you’re not rushing from one attraction to the next.

Choose the Right Footwear

It may sound obvious, but comfortable shoes can make or break your trip. Pick shoes with good support and cushioning—ideally ones you’ve already worn in. New shoes can cause blisters, and sore feet can quickly ruin a day of exploring.

If you want something dressier for the evening, pack a second pair, but stick to supportive shoes during the day. Your feet will thank you.

Eat and Drink Consistently Throughout the Day

When you’re busy sightseeing, it’s easy to forget to eat or drink regularly. But your energy levels drop fast when your blood sugar dips. Keep a small snack in your bag—nuts, fruit, or a granola bar are great options—to refuel on the go.

Drink water steadily throughout the day. Many U.S. cities have public water fountains or bottle refill stations, so bring a reusable bottle. Try not to rely too much on coffee or sugary drinks—they can dehydrate you and lead to an energy crash later.

Give Your Body Time to Recover in the Evening

After a long day on your feet, your body needs time to rest. Stretch your legs, take a warm shower, and elevate your feet for a few minutes to improve circulation and reduce swelling.

Make sure you get enough sleep, too. If your hotel is in a lively area, earplugs or a sleep mask can help you rest better. A good night’s sleep will leave you refreshed and ready for another day of adventure.

Find the Right Balance Between Activity and Enjoyment

A city vacation isn’t just about checking off landmarks—it’s about soaking in the atmosphere, enjoying the food, and noticing the little details you might miss if you’re rushing.

By pacing yourself, listening to your body, and taking time to rest, you’ll experience more and feel better doing it. You’ll return home with great memories—and far fewer sore feet.
